BOLD: Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet
Eating Lean Beef Daily Can Help Lower Cholesterol as Part of a Heart-Healthy Diet
The latest research on heart health and lean beef presents a new way of thinking: lean beef can be part of a solution to one of America’s greatest health challenges.
The Beef in an Optimal Lean Diet (BOLD) study was a human clinical trial conducted by researchers at The Pennsylvania State University. Participants following BOLD diets consumed up to 5.4 oz. of lean beef daily. At the end of five weeks, they experienced a 10 percent drop in LDL (or “bad”) cholesterol, and a drop in total cholesterol levels. The BOLD results were comparable to the gold standard of heart-healthy diets, the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) which was also consumed by study participants for comparison. Tips on building a heart healthy diet.
The BOLD study is the latest addition to a body of evidence that supports including lean beef in a heart-healthy diet. To learn more about this study, please visit BeefNutrition.org.
